U.S. President Obama opened the 07th October 2009. year, Astronomy Night on the South Lawn of the White House. Around 150 students of secondary schools in Washington got a chance to learn more about the universe, using more than 20 telescopes NASA and other institutions.

They observed Jupiter, the Moon and selected stars. Other activities included the presentation of scientific samples of lunar rocks and meteorites. NASA Federal museum, a consortium of museums, science centers and planetariums, conducted activities throughout the world to coincide with an event at the White House. Astronomy Night is conducted on the occasion of the International Year of Astronomy 2009th, a global celebration marking the contribution to society and culture in the 400 years since Galileo first used a telescope.
